With Independence Day around the corner, four Indonesian intellectual organizations are jointly holding a seminar on human resources in Jakarta. This seminar, which was officially opened by President Soeharto yesterday, is the first of its kind ever held. Obviously, we hail this seminar as an important effort to produce quality human resources, which will be much needed by the nation in the coming decades.

Raising the level of human resources is important for two reasons: First, to keep in step with progress of science and technology, it is highly desirable to have quality human resources that are physically, mentally and spiritually capable of managing development while diminishing its negative impact. Second, the seminar reflects the sense of responsibility of all parties in laying solid foundations that are inspired by moral, ethical and spiritual values.

Through the forum the intellectuals are demonstrating their ability to maintain and solidify the unity and integrity of the nation. The Indonesian intellectuals have played and will continue to play crucial role in the nation's struggle. Hopefully, the intellectuals will not stop with this seminar but proceed to establish other forums to deliberate on other national issues.
