Integration of Islamic Philanthropy Key to Lifting Communities Out of Poverty
The National Zakat Agency (Baznas) has emphasised the importance of integrating various Islamic philanthropic instruments, such as zakat, infak, sadaqah, waqf, and other religious social funds, as a key to strengthening efforts to lift communities out of poverty and improve public welfare sustainably. This was conveyed by Baznas Vice Chairman Zainut Tauhid Sa’adi during a Baznas Knowledge Sharing event themed ‘Synergy of Islamic Philanthropy Pillars for Poverty Alleviation’, organised by the Baznas RI Education and Training Centre and broadcast via the Baznas TV YouTube channel.
Zainut explained that the significant potential of Islamic philanthropic instruments would have a more optimal impact if managed within an integrated ecosystem. According to him, each instrument has different characteristics and functions but can complement each other to create a broader social and economic impact. ‘Zakat can be utilised as productive business capital to build the economic independence of the ummah, waqf can be used for the provision of productive assets and infrastructure, while infak can support training and business mentoring programmes,’ said Zainut.
He added that sadaqah also plays an important role as emergency aid, forming part of the social safety net for communities facing vulnerable conditions. Therefore, all Islamic philanthropic instruments should not operate in isolation but must be synergised through integrated interventions to optimise their benefits. ‘Because of this, these instruments must not work alone, but must strengthen each other through integrated interventions,’ he said.
Zainut explained that Islamic philanthropic interventions can be carried out in stages, starting from emergency aid and meeting basic needs, post-crisis community recovery, economic empowerment, to driving sustainable social and economic transformation. With this approach, Islamic philanthropy is expected to make a greater contribution to national development.
Furthermore, Zainut encouraged a paradigm shift in philanthropy from mere charity towards sustainable social transformation. According to him, the assistance provided should not only aim to meet the short-term needs of mustahik but must also be able to encourage economic recovery, expand economic inclusion, and increase community self-reliance. ‘Currently, we are still facing real challenges in the form of poverty, social welfare problems, and economic vulnerability. This condition requires solutions that are not only economic in nature but must also be based on the values of solidarity and Indonesia’s spiritual values,’ he said.
He hopes that the synergy and integration of all pillars of Islamic philanthropy can continue to be strengthened to deliver a wider impact for the community. According to him, the ultimate goal of these efforts is the realisation of sustainable, just, and inclusive development, so that its benefits can be felt by all levels of Indonesian society.
