Insurance firm pays billions

MEDAN, North Sumatra: State-owned insurance company PT Jasa Raharja has over the past five years paid Rp 21.8 billion (US$9.5 million) in compensation to victims of traffic accidents.

Antara reported that 6,272 people died and 9,970 others were injured in traffic accidents that occurred between 1991 and 1995.

The agency also reported that the insurance company has been able to cut down the waiting period, from the time claims are lodged to the time a settlement is issued, from 54 days in previous years to 22 days in 1995.

In addition, the company has also extended Rp 243 million in loans to 21 small enterprises in Medan for the period of 1992 to 1994.

Yesterday, H. Achmadi replaced Hamka Santri Anom in a ceremony as the head of the Medan branch of the company. (swe)
