Instagram Launches Harmful Content Search Notification Feature for Parents in Indonesia
Instagram has officially introduced its latest protection feature for teenage users in Indonesia. Through an update to its parental supervision tools, the Meta-owned platform will automatically notify parents if their teenage children repeatedly search for terms related to suicide or self-harm within a short period.
This step was taken in response to the sensitivity of mental health issues and parents’ concerns about their children’s digital activity. Although most teenagers do not use Instagram to search for such harmful content, this feature serves as an additional safety net.
If the system detects attempts to search for prohibited terms, Instagram will block the search results and direct the teenager to guidance and professional support services.
The feature is designed to provide relevant information without excessively intruding on privacy. Notifications will be sent through various communication channels so that parents can promptly take necessary action.
In developing this feature, Instagram consulted with the Suicide and Self-Harm Advisory Group to determine appropriate search thresholds. The aim is to ensure that notifications remain effective and useful without flooding parents with unnecessary alerts.
Instagram acknowledged that a precautionary principle is the top priority.
“Parents may occasionally receive a notification even when there is actually nothing risky to worry about. However, we and the experts believe that this step is the right starting point,” Instagram wrote in its statement.
In addition to the notification feature, Instagram reaffirmed its strict policy prohibiting content that promotes or glorifies self-harm.
Although content sharing personal experiences related to mental health is still permitted as a form of peer support, such content will not be shown to teenage accounts, even if they follow the account that posted it.
For searches related to mental health in general but not leading to harmful actions, Instagram will still direct users to support service guidance. Furthermore, the company is committed to continuing coordination with emergency services if a high risk of someone actually harming themselves is detected.
