Instagram introduces special parental notifications to help protect teen mental health

Instagram has started introducing a special parental notification feature in Indonesia to help safeguard teenagers’ mental health when they show signs of searching for content related to self-harm.

This feature is part of the supervision services Meta provides for teen accounts on Instagram.

“Instagram will begin notifying parents in Indonesia who have activated the supervision feature if a teenager repeatedly attempts to search for terms related to suicide or self-harm within a short period of time,” Meta said in a statement received on Friday.

The parental notification feature on Instagram was developed by Meta together with experts from the Suicide and Self-Harm Advisory Group.

Instagram explained that the notification works based on the search activity of teenagers whose parents have activated the supervision feature.

The teen search activity in question includes searches for words that could encourage people to commit suicide or harm themselves.

Notifications are sent not only through the app but also via email, SMS, and WhatsApp, following the contact information available.

When the notification is opened, parents will see a full-screen message explaining that their teenager has repeatedly attempted to search for terms related to suicide or self-harm on Instagram within a short period of time.

“We want to help parents take the right steps when their teenager’s search activity indicates a need for support. We also want to avoid sending unnecessary notifications so that the messages sent remain effective and useful,” the Instagram message read.

Instagram stated that its platform actually has strict policies prohibiting content that promotes self-harm, but content about personal experiences in overcoming such issues is still permitted.

For teen accounts, such content should not appear even if the teen account follows someone who shares those experiences.

However, the presence of this notification is one step to continue protecting teenagers if at any time there are searches regarding ending one’s life.
