Inspiring Asia Micro Film Festival Opens Opportunities for Community Empowerment

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Inspiring Asia Micro Film Festival 2026 #InspiringIndonesia aims to open spaces for community empowerment through a short film-making competition. “Through a creative approach like short films, we see opportunities to highlight these practices so they can be learned from, replicated, and have a greater impact on society,” said Head of Strategic & Impact Communications at Tanoto Foundation, Deviani Wulandari, in a press release on Thursday. Deviani noted that many good practices at the community level, in areas such as child rearing, education, and health, actually have real impacts but are not widely known. Yet, amid the complexity of social challenges, the role of communities is increasingly crucial as drivers of change at the grassroots level. From education initiatives and health efforts to strengthening the creative economy, various resilience efforts for community empowerment continue to emerge. Under the theme “Community Empowerment: Belonging, Resilience, Thriving”, various groups, from filmmakers and students to communities, social enterprises, and organisations, are encouraged to broaden public understanding of the importance of community empowerment, increase connections between local initiatives, and open spaces for stories that have previously been underrepresented to reach wider audiences. Programme Director of Bakti Pendidikan Djarum Foundation, Primadi H. Serad, also emphasised the importance of the younger generation honing their social sensitivity as well as critical thinking skills amid rapid technological developments. This year, the competition introduces a breakthrough with the Best AI Film Award category to encourage inclusivity in storytelling. AI innovation allows creators to break down conventional production barriers that are often expensive and complex, enabling them to focus entirely on the strength of the community empowerment messages they wish to convey. The competition invites participants to produce short films that capture the dynamics, challenges, and impacts of community initiatives. The competition categories include Best Micro Film Award, Best Project Award, and Best AI Film Award. Finalists from Indonesia will advance to the Asian level in the Inspiring Asia Micro Film Festival 2026 series and have the opportunity to proceed to the Grand Final in Manila, Philippines, to compete with participants from various Asian countries. The internal selection stage will be held from 1 to 15 July, announcement of semi-finalists and onboarding from 16 to 20 July, community vetting from 21 July to 11 August, final evaluation and assessment from 12 to 16 August, and announcement of finalists on 17 August 2026. The regional screening and awarding of winners will take place in September 2026.
