Inspired by Lamine Yamal's Family, HNW Encourages PKH Beneficiaries to Succeed
Deputy Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Hidayat Nur Wahid (HNW) has urged Family Hope Programme (PKH) beneficiaries to remain optimistic and not despair in the face of economic challenges. He encouraged recipients to take advantage of empowerment programmes from the Ministry of Social Affairs to increase their self-reliance until they can graduate from PKH membership.
HNW cited the struggles of the families of young Spanish World Cup-winning footballers Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams. Both came from poor immigrant families, but through optimism and their parents’ hard work, they have now become world champions. They have also managed to improve the economic and social status of their parents.
“The stories of the Lamine and Nico families teach us that economic limitations are not a reason to give up. Parents currently facing economic hardship must strive to ensure their children escape such conditions by improving their welfare levels, which in the context of PKH is called graduation. Such success will certainly have a cross-generational impact,” HNW said on Thursday (23/7/2026).
He made the remarks during a P2K2 supervision activity in Menteng District, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday (22/7).
The member of House of Representatives Commission VIII explained that the Ministry of Social Affairs’ Family Hope Programme is a constitutional mandate, as stated in Article 34 paragraph (2) of the 1945 Constitution. The article stipulates that the state must develop a social security system and empower the weak and underprivileged.
Therefore, even though the country is burdened by nearly IDR 10,000 trillion in debt, the programme continues to be implemented and prioritised.
“It is only right that this mandate is safeguarded and made successful by PKH beneficiaries, one way being by actively participating in P2K2 to continuously improve family capacity, enhance skills, and foster a positive and productive mindset towards the life challenges they face. Moreover, the Minister of Social Affairs has reminded that this assistance is temporary, while empowerment is permanent,” he continued.
The PKS faction legislator for the Jakarta II electoral district also opened up opportunities for various follow-up programmes that beneficiaries can utilise. These include the Socio-Economic Empowerment Programme (PPSE) with business capital assistance of up to IDR 5 million, the Smart Indonesia Card for College (KIP Kuliah) for high school graduates wishing to continue their education, and the Indonesia Smart Programme (PIP) for madrasah students.
He also expressed appreciation for the PKH facilitators, who serve as the frontline in distributing social assistance, praising their commitment to their work.
“We in House Commission VIII will continue to oversee these social protection programmes to ensure they are sustainable and well-targeted, and capable of producing families that can overcome their economic and social problems, becoming self-reliant and prosperous,” HNW concluded.
