Inspection of Building Suspected as Cultural Heritage in Menteng Following Demolition, Features TNI Logo Sign
A residential building in the Menteng area of Central Jakarta, suspected of being a cultural heritage site, has reportedly been demolished in recent weeks. The structure, featuring Dutch architectural style, is no longer intact as it previously was.
Republika visited the house located at the end of Jalan Teuku Umar, Gondangdia Village, Menteng District, Central Jakarta. Based on Republika’s observations, the building area was obstructed by corrugated iron sheets, making it difficult for people to see inside.
From within the building area, there is a sign bearing the TNI logo indicating that the area located at Jalan Teuku Umar Number 2 is state-owned land. Additionally, there is another sign stating that the land belongs to PT Temasra Jaya, with a building use rights certificate (SHGB).
From field observations, there was no construction activity within the building area. However, there were several wooden sheds in the area. There is also a military barracks tent, typically used by TNI soldiers, standing in the courtyard of the building. However, no signs of human activity were visible inside.
The building has a very antiquated appearance. The house is equipped not only with a main building but also with a tower beside it, indicating that the structure has an old-fashioned style.
In images of the building circulating on social media, the house was equipped with roof tiles. Additionally, the upper portion of the building’s windows also featured a canopy in an old-fashioned style.
However, when Republika visited the house on Wednesday afternoon, the roof or tiles from the building were no longer visible. The roof appeared to have been demolished. The same applied to the canopy that was previously on the window section.
To date, it remains uncertain whether the building is actually a cultural heritage site or not. However, the demolition or alteration of the building is reported to have proceeded without permission from the relevant authorities.
