Inside Cengkareng Social Welfare Home: Caring for Hundreds of Elderly with Diverse Needs
Large rooms filled with dozens of beds accommodate 435 elderly residents at the Penti Sosial Tresna Werdha Budi Mulia 2 (PSTW BM2) in Cengkareng, West Jakarta. Social workers and facility managers care for residents with varying conditions, including independent elderly, those with dementia, mental disorders, and bedridden individuals requiring full-time care.
Ahmad Taib, head of PSTW BM2’s service unit, stated most residents are found by Satpol PP or police. ‘We only accept those referred from shelters,’ he said on Thursday, 28 May 2026. The facility also receives elderly from families who apply through local districts and the Social Affairs Office, provided they have a valid Jakarta ID card (KTP DKI).
Enpe, a PSTW BM2 social worker, explained residents are housed in four dormitories, each with four large rooms containing a total of 17 beds. Facilities include activity hall, health clinic, consultation rooms, physiotherapy, kitchen, mosque, and mortuary.
Enpe noted the health conditions of residents vary widely, with common ailments like hypertension. Approximately 60% suffer from mental disorders requiring regular medication and specialised care. ‘Every month, we refer them to RSKd hospital for specialised psychiatric treatment and medication,’ he added.
