Inpex: Abadi Masela to contribute to Japan's energy security

Japanese oil and gas company Inpex Corp. believes the liquefied natural gas (LNG) project worth 21 billion US dollars in eastern Indonesia has the potential to become one of Asia’s largest LNG producers and can secure future supplies. Inpex CEO Takayuki Ueda described the Abadi Masela National Strategic Project as highly important and contributing to energy security in Japan and the entire Indo-Pacific region. The groundbreaking ceremony for Abadi Masela was held on Thursday (16/7) in the Tanimbar Islands, Maluku, and was witnessed virtually by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto from Jakarta. Inpex, which holds a 65 percent stake in the project, is working with Indonesian state energy company Pertamina and Malaysian energy company Petronas to build offshore facilities in the Arafura Sea. According to Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), the project, which has been delayed for nearly three decades since its contract was signed in 1998, will integrate carbon capture and storage technology to achieve a net-zero emission society. President Prabowo described the project as an effort to strengthen Indonesia’s national energy independence, as well as a driving force for the nation’s progress.
