Innovation and Exploration Are Key to Sustaining the Oil and Gas Industry
The sustainability of the oil and gas industry is determined not only by the ability to maintain production levels but also by the success in discovering new resources and implementing innovations that enhance operational efficiency. In facing global energy challenges, oil and gas companies are required to continually adapt through operational transformations that are more effective, safe, and sustainable. Strengthening exploration, field development, and technology utilisation are key strategies for safeguarding national energy security while ensuring future business continuity. This commitment was a focus during the 2025 Financial Year Annual General Meeting (RUPST) of PT Pertamina EP, held in Jakarta on Thursday (5/6). During the meeting, the company presented various achievements throughout 2025, covering production performance, exploration activities, work safety, financial performance, and the implementation of social and environmental responsibility programmes.
PT Pertamina EP President Director Rachmat Hidajat explained that during 2025, the company managed upstream oil and gas facilities spread across five assets and 22 operating fields, both onshore and offshore, in 13 provinces. From these activities, the company recorded oil production of 68,338 barrels per day (BOPD), gas production reaching 792 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD), and total oil and gas production of 205,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (MBOEPD). These achievements were supported by the drilling of 12 exploration wells and 137 development wells throughout the year. Additionally, the company acquired 113 kilometres of two-dimensional seismic data and conducted a three-dimensional seismic survey covering 79 square kilometres to support exploration activities. Through these various activities, Pertamina EP successfully discovered 2C resources of 133 million barrels of oil equivalent (MMBOE) and added proven reserves (P1) of 59 MMBOE.
‘Last year’s achievements reflect Pertamina EP’s ability to deliver measured operational innovations, maintain performance reliability, and strengthen the resilience of the upstream portfolio. Through sustainable innovation, we reinforce national energy security while shaping a more sustainable and resilient future for oil and gas operations,’ stated Rachmat Hidajat. The commitment to innovation was also demonstrated by the successful first onstream liquid production at the Akasia Bagus Gathering Station (SP ABG) Stage 1, located in the Jatibarang Field, Indramayu Regency. The facility produces approximately 400 barrels of fluid per day, with an installed capacity of 7,250 barrels of liquid per day (BLPD), and is part of the Akasia Bagus–Gantar Field Development Optimisation programme. According to Rachmat, this success demonstrates the company’s ability to develop reserves while increasing production capacity through various operational innovations. The entire development process was executed with high discipline, supported by the achievement of more than 2.2 million safe working hours without a Lost Time Injury (LTI), and in collaboration with various stakeholders.
‘This approach ensures that every one of our facilities operates according to quality standards, design capacity, and long-term readiness, for the company’s sustainable upstream oil and gas operations,’ he said. The RUPST also affirmed the company’s direction for adaptive transformation through strengthening production, exploration, the implementation of Good Corporate Governance (GCG) principles, Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) standards, and technology utilisation to enhance operational efficiency. Corporately, the company successfully obtained an AAA rating, or very healthy category, from Fitch Ratings Indonesia, which serves as recognition of the company’s strong business fundamentals and governance. In the aspect of work safety and the environment, the company recorded more than 3.12 million safe working hours throughout 2025 and received 17 Green PROPER awards and four Blue PROPER awards from the Ministry of Environment. The commitment to sustainability was also realised through the implementation of 444 Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) programmes covering the sectors of education, health, economy, environment, infrastructure, and disaster response in 30 districts and cities across 13 provinces where the company operates. Overall, these programmes have provided benefits to more than 40,000 direct and indirect beneficiaries.
PT Pertamina EP President Commissioner Morry Ermond assessed that the company successfully maintained operational and business performance amidst various external challenges occurring throughout the past year. ‘Throughout 2025, the company demonstrated effective performance in maintaining business continuity and achieving optimal results, despite experiencing various external challenges, both domestically and internationally,’ he said. Meanwhile, representing the majority shareholder from PT Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE), Caesarian, VP Controller of PHE, expressed appreciation for the increase in oil production, stability of gas production, and the achievement of reserve additions that exceeded the company’s target. ‘For 2026, the shareholders expect the company to continue the acceleration of business transformation, strengthen the implementation of HSSE principles, enhance efforts to achieve the 2C resource discovery target, and improve production performance, which impacts the increase in company profits,’ stated Caesarian. Through the 2025 Financial Year RUPST, Pertamina EP reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening safe, reliable, efficient, and sustainable upstream oil and gas operations through innovation, accelerated business transformation, and the implementation of HSSE principles.
