Innalillahi, the Marine Corps Commander Who Secured Jakarta During the 1998 Riots Has Passed Away
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Commander of the Marine Corps (Dankormar) for the period 1996-1999, Lieutenant General (Ret.) Suharto, has reportedly passed away while being treated at RSPAD Gatot Soebroto in Central Jakarta on Saturday (18/4/2026) afternoon WIB. Suharto was Dankormar when he led the security of the burning Jakarta in 1998. Together with the then-Commander of Kostrad Lieutenant General Prabowo Subianto and Jakarta Regional Military Commander Major General Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, the late Suharto deployed Marine personnel to secure Jakarta, particularly the DPR/MPR building in Senayan, Central Jakarta. Marine Corps Commander (Pangkormar) Lieutenant General (Mar) Endi Supardi also extended condolences over the passing of the late figure. “Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un. We extend our deepest condolences over the death of TNI Marine Lieutenant General (Ret.) Suharto, the 12th Commander of the Marine Corps,” said Endi, who is the first three-star general after the organisational validation leading the AL TNI Marine Corps, quoted by Republika in Jakarta on Sunday (19/4/2026). Former Secretary of the State-Owned Enterprises Ministry Said Didu also expressed condolences over the passing of the 1969 Akabri/AAL graduate. “We extend our deepest condolences. The late figure was well-known for appearing alongside the people during the 1998 demonstrations. He fought for the nation’s improvement until the end of his life,” said Said.
