Inmates Earn Rp 800,000 Monthly from Livestock Farming at Ciangir Prison
Inmates at Ciangir Prison in Tangerang, Banten, are being empowered to manage livestock and agricultural activities, earning a premium or wage for their work. One inmate, 26-year-old Yusuf, who is serving time for theft, earns Rp 800,000 per month from tending to laying hens. “My monthly premium is Rp 800,000, and I also get a daily coffee allowance and sometimes pocket money. The rest I save as a provision for when I go home,” Yusuf said when met at Ciangir Prison on Thursday (9/7/2026). Yusuf noted many positive aspects of his time at Ciangir Prison, including learning how to care for chickens and identify signs of illness. He hopes to apply and develop the knowledge he has gained once he is released. Another inmate, Mukriji, who is serving time for a drug-related offence, also receives Rp 800,000 per month for tending to goats. He has learned how to feed and treat sick goats and plans to develop his own livestock business at his home in Tangerang after his release.
