Initial Meeting on Draft Election Bill in Commission II Suddenly Cancelled, Reasons Unclear
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - An internal meeting of Commission II of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) to hear the initial presentation of the Draft Election Bill (RUU Pemilu) was suddenly cancelled. As of now, the reason for the postponement remains unknown. Commission II member Ahmad Doli Kurnia stated that he had not received any information regarding the cause of the cancellation of the meeting, which was scheduled for Tuesday (13/4/2026), with an agenda of a presentation from the Council Expertise Agency (BKD). “Yesterday, we were supposed to have an internal meeting to hear the presentation from the BKD. But it was postponed again, and I don’t know why,” said Doli, when met at the DPR RI Building on Wednesday (15/4/2026). Doli provided this explanation in response to questions about the progress of drafting and discussing the RUU Pemilu, following several public hearings (RDPU). According to Doli, the Tuesday meeting should have been the initial step for the DPR to enter the substantive discussion phase of the RUU Pemilu. However, with the cancellation, the discussion process has not yet begun. In fact, he said, Commission II of the DPR had previously pushed several times for the revision of the Election Law to be discussed promptly. Doli emphasised that discussing the RUU Pemilu is urgent, given the numerous Constitutional Court (MK) rulings that need to be followed up, including decisions related to the separation of national and local elections. Additionally, the time leading up to the next election stages is approaching. Even the formation of the selection team for election organisers should have been done around August or September this year. “Now we’re entering May. If we discuss it, do we want to discuss it in just two months, three months?” he said. The Golkar politician assessed that the pattern of rushed law discussions ahead of election stages must not occur.
