Influenza A cases are experiencing an upward trend in Indonesia. According to data from the Indonesian Ministry of Health as of 12 September 2026, the proportion of positive influenza laboratory tests reached 38 per cent in week 35, an increase from 22 per cent the previous week.

Out of 175 specimens tested, 66 were confirmed positive for influenza, with the majority being influenza A(H1N1) pdm09. Responding to this, Professor dr. Tri Wibawa, a Professor of Clinical Microbiology from Gadjah Mada University (UGM), stated that the public does not need to react excessively to the situation. This is because the circulating influenza A(H1N1) is a derivative of the 2009 H1N1 pandemic virus that has undergone genetic changes.

“The increase in influenza A findings in August 2026 does not need to be overreacted to, although risk mitigation must still be prepared,” Professor Tri Wibawa explained in a written statement, quoted on Tuesday (22/9/2026).

He explained that influenza is generally caused by influenza type A and B viruses. Common symptoms typically include fever accompanied by chills, coughing, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, and fatigue.

Furthermore, Tri reminded the public to pay closer attention to groups at higher risk of experiencing complications due to influenza. These groups include seniors over the age of 65, children under five, individuals with chronic illnesses, and those with weakened immune systems.

“Vulnerable groups include the elderly over 65, children under 5, people with chronic diseases, and those experiencing other declines in immunity levels,” he said.

To prevent or reduce the risk of transmission, Tri encouraged the public to implement several simple preventive steps. According to him, maintaining a healthy lifestyle should be accompanied by practising proper cough and sneeze etiquette, regular hand washing, and avoiding close contact with individuals suffering from influenza.
