Influenza A Cases Remain High: Recognise Symptoms and Prevention Methods
The Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes RI) has recorded an increase in Influenza A cases across the country. As of 12 September 2026, the proportion of positive influenza results in laboratory examinations reached 38 per cent during week 35, representing a 22 per cent increase from the previous week.
The majority of identified cases are Influenza A (H1N1)pdm09. Meanwhile, 33 per cent of the detected cases occurred in children aged between zero and four years.
Responding to this trend, internal medicine specialist and health coach, Dr Kasim Rasjidi, stated that the current surge in Influenza A is not caused by a new disease. Influenza Type A is a strain of the influenza virus that attacks the respiratory system, ranging from the nose and throat to the lungs.
Influenza A typically increases during transitional seasons (pancaroba), which can cause a decline in the body’s immune system.
“What distinguishes Influenza A from a common cold? Fundamentally, both are caused by viruses. The viruses are different, but the behaviour is similar,” said Dr Kasim when contacted by Republika on Monday (28/9/2026).
He explained that the severity of influenza symptoms can vary between individuals. This condition depends on several factors, such as age, pre-existing health conditions, other concurrent illnesses, and medications currently being consumed.
One characteristic of Influenza A is that symptoms can appear suddenly. An individual who previously appeared healthy may abruptly experience a high fever of over 38 degrees Celsius.
“In addition to fever, Influenza A symptoms can include coughing, a runny nose, and a sore throat. These symptoms may appear simultaneously or sequentially. The infection can also be accompanied by chills and a loss of appetite,” said Dr Kasim.
He noted that children and the elderly are groups more vulnerable to Influenza A exposure. Consequently, the public is advised to maintain immunity through regular physical activity and exposure to morning sunlight.
“For those currently infected, please endeavour to wear a mask and avoid handshakes. For Muslims, if going to the mosque, bring your own prayer mat,” he added.
