Influencer Criticising Government Brutally Murdered

A popular social media influencer in Nigeria, renowned for his blunt political views towards the government, has been murdered in his home in the northern city of Kano. This was revealed in an official statement from his family and human rights groups on Wednesday, as reported by AFP.

Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu, 57, was found dead with his throat slit in his home on Tuesday night by friends and neighbours. The individuals grew suspicious and climbed the perimeter fence after failing to gain entry through the door since Monday.

His death occurs as the election campaign season in Africa’s most populous nation begins to unfold. Nigeria is scheduled to hold a presidential election on 16 January 2027.

“He was killed with severe injuries to the head,” said Aisha Sharu Lawan, Dan Shagamu’s elder sister.

“The scene was horrific. Both of his mobile phones were missing,” she added.

Dan Shagamu amassed hundreds of thousands of followers on Facebook and TikTok through his aggressive videos in the Hausa language, which criticised the government on local political and social issues. While it remains unclear whether his death is directly linked to his political views, Lawan stated that the family suspects foul play.

“His friend said he had disagreements with several people who had threatened to kill him,” Lawan said, calling for an investigation and the prosecution of the killers.

Dan Shagamu himself was a reporter for a state-funded local radio station before becoming active on social media and building a large fanbase. Amnesty International condemned his murder, stating in a press release that he was “brutally slaughtered after being overpowered by his killers.”

Elections in Nigeria are typically marked by violence, with politicians recruiting thugs to intimidate opponents and silence political dissent. These mercenaries often cause chaos during demonstrations and at polling stations to help their candidates gain an advantage over rivals.

“Ahead of the elections, we continue to receive disturbing reports regarding threats to life and intimidation related to politics,” said Amnesty International.
