Inflation Reaches 0.41% in March 2026 Due to Eid Celebrations
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded an inflation rate of 0.41% (m-to-m) in March 2026.
Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics at BPS, Ateng Hartono, stated that this monthly inflation figure is lower than the previous year’s 1.65%. Meanwhile, year-to-date inflation was recorded at 0.94%.
“The expenditure group contributing the most to monthly inflation was food, beverages, and tobacco, with an inflation rate of 1.07% and a contribution to overall inflation of 0.32%,” Ateng explained in the BPS release at the BPS Head Office on Wednesday (1/4/2026).
The dominant commodities driving inflation in this group were fresh fish, broiler chicken meat, rice, broiler chicken eggs, bird’s eye chillies, cooking oil, and beef.
Additionally, there were commodities that contributed to deflation in March 2026, including air transport fares and gold jewellery, each at 0.03%.
Based on components, Ateng said that inflation in March 2026 was mainly driven by the volatile component, with a contribution to inflation of 0.27%.
The dominant commodities contributing to inflation here were broiler chicken meat, rice, broiler chicken eggs, bird’s eye chillies, and beef. Subsequently, the core component contributed 0.08% to inflation.
The dominant commodities contributing to inflation in this group were cooking oil and rice with side dishes.
By region, 34 provinces recorded monthly inflation, while 4 provinces experienced deflation. The highest inflation occurred in Papua Pegunungan at 2.57%. The deepest deflation was in Maluku at 0.75%.
BPS specifically reported inflation in the transportation group during the Eid period. Based on the historical data from the last five years, inflation always occurs during every Ramadan and Eid period, except in 2025.
He continued that air transport fares acted as a buffer for inflation in this group, with a deflationary contribution to the overall rate of 0.03%.
