Industry Ministry Optimises Packaging Industry Certification to Boost Competitiveness
The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) is optimising the implementation of standardisation and certification for the national packaging industry as a strategic move to enhance competitiveness, expand market access, and strengthen its position in the global supply chain. Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita stated that strengthening the competitiveness of the packaging industry must be carried out comprehensively, not only through product and technological innovation but also by ensuring every product meets recognised quality standards and certification. “This step is important to increase market confidence, expand trade access, and strengthen the national industry’s position in the global supply chain,” the Minister said in a statement confirmed in Jakarta on Thursday. According to him, the development of the packaging industry is no longer solely oriented towards aesthetics or product protection. “This industry is also required to meet quality and safety standards, as well as various evolving regulatory provisions, including increasing public demands for product safety and halal assurance,” he said. As part of this strengthening effort, the Centre for Standardisation and Industrial Services for Chemical, Pharmaceutical, and Packaging Industries (BBSPJIKFK) under the Standardisation and Industrial Services Policy Agency (BSKJI) of the Ministry of Industry held a webinar entitled ‘Improving the Quality and Competitiveness of Packaging Products through Certification’. The event, held online on 12 July, featured speakers from the Halal Product Assurance Organising Agency (BPJPH) of the Republic of Indonesia and BBSPJIKFK to enhance industry players’ understanding of the importance of product certification and halal certification. Head of BSKJI Emmy Suryandari emphasised that standardisation and certification are strategic instruments to boost the competitiveness of the national industry, including the packaging sector, which faces increasingly high global market demands. “The application of standards and certification not only aims to meet regulations but is also an important instrument in improving quality, safety, efficiency, and market confidence in national industrial products. By implementing standards and certification, the Ministry of Industry continues to strive for industrial transformation to be more competitive, sustainable, and capable of penetrating the global market,” she explained. She further stated that BSKJI is currently supported by 24 technical service units in the form of Centres and Standardisation Centres providing various testing, certification, calibration, inspection, and technical assistance services for industry players throughout Indonesia.
