Industry Ministry: Indonesia's downstreaming strategy gains global recognition

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Industry has stated that Indonesia’s industrial downstreaming strategy has received global recognition, as reflected in the Industrial Development Report (IDR) 2026 published by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

The report positions Indonesia as one of the examples of best practice in the development of downstreaming-based industries.

“This is proof that the transformation of Indonesian industry is beginning to gain the attention of the international community. Going forward, we will continue to strengthen the competitiveness of national industry so that it is capable of producing value-added products, creating jobs, and increasing Indonesia’s contribution to global value chains,” said Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita in a statement in Jakarta on Tuesday.

The recognition was delivered at the regional launch of the IDR 2026, held through the Workshop: A Regional Launch Event of UNIDO’s Industrial Development Report (IDR) 2026 and Indonesia Development Talks 24th Edition in Jakarta.

In its report, UNIDO specifically highlights the development of critical mineral processing industries and the national electric vehicle ecosystem as examples of Indonesia’s success in building value-added industries. This approach is considered capable of strengthening manufacturing competitiveness while creating opportunities for new industries to grow.

The Industrial Development Report (IDR) is UNIDO’s flagship publication containing analyses of global industrial development as well as policy recommendations for its member states.

The 2026 edition discusses the various changes shaping the face of global industry, ranging from technological transformation, the energy transition, shifting investment flows, to geopolitical dynamics.
