Industry Ministry Drafts New Electric Vehicle Roadmap to Guide Gradual Transition

The Ministry of Industry is preparing to refine the national electric vehicle development roadmap. Deputy Minister of Industry Faisol Riza stated that the new roadmap is being drafted with the involvement of automotive industry players. This means a total shift to electric vehicles cannot happen instantly, given that the petrol-based automotive industry has developed over decades with conventional engine vehicles. “Today we are drafting a more mature and comprehensive roadmap, because of course the manufacturers and companies that have been in Indonesia for decades cannot just immediately adjust to the development of the automotive industry, but gradually we also ask that market developments be their concern,” Faisol said during a meeting with House of Representatives Commission VII on Tuesday. The drafting of the roadmap is part of the government’s effort to maintain the competitiveness of the national automotive industry amidst rapid technological change. On the other hand, the government also wants to ensure that the transition process towards electrification does not disrupt ongoing investment or production. According to Faisol, the development of vehicle demand in the market is also one of the main considerations in formulating the new policy. Therefore, the government has chosen to design a roadmap that can be implemented gradually by all industry players. “So we are together with the industry to redraft a roadmap that is more applicable and can serve as a guide for this vehicle transformation,” he said. With the new roadmap, industry players are expected to have certainty regarding investment direction while being able to keep up with changing market needs. “Regarding the electric vehicle transformation activities, today we are drafting a more mature and more comprehensive roadmap,” Faisol said.
