Industry Minister: Batam-Made AirTag Already Exported to the US

Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita has revealed that Apple’s AirTag tracking product, manufactured in Batam, Riau Islands, has begun exports to the United States. According to Agus, production activities for AirTag in Batam and AirPods Max components in Bandung are already operational. In fact, the AirTag product has penetrated export markets. “Production of AirTag and AirPods Max in Bandung is already underway. I was invited to view it directly, but have not yet had the time,” Agus stated on the sidelines of the Apple Developer Institute inauguration in Jakarta on Tuesday (21/4/2026). “The activities have started and are even beginning exports to America,” Agus added. This device operates using Apple’s “Find My” network, connected to millions of other Apple devices worldwide to track the AirTag’s location anonymously and securely. Agus views Apple’s decision to produce AirTag in Batam as part of the company’s long-term commitment to strengthening Indonesia’s technology industry ecosystem. He hopes this production facility will open opportunities to increase exports of high-value-added products. With the start of AirTag exports from Batam to the United States, Indonesia is seen as playing a larger role in Apple’s global technology supply chain. A Bloomberg report details that the Batam AirTag factory contributes to 20 percent of global AirTag production. The factory is also expected to create new jobs, employing around 1,000 workers in its initial operations. In addition to building the AirTag factory in Batam, the $1 billion US investment is also used to establish a factory in Bandung, West Java, as the production hub for Mesh AirPods Max pad components.
