Public interest in vocational education continues to rise in line with the high demand from industry for workers with specific skills and competency certifications. This trend is reflected in the surge of applicants for the New Student Admission Selection (SPMB) for the 2026/2027 academic year at SMK SMTI Padang. The vocational school, under the auspices of the Ministry of Industry, recorded 4,043 prospective student registrations this year, a 60.63 percent increase compared to the 2,517 applicants in the previous year. However, the school’s capacity remains limited, with only 264 places available, comprising 150 places for the Industrial Chemical Engineering (TKI) programme and 114 places for the Industrial Automation Engineering (TOI) programme. This has intensified competition, with the selection ratio reaching 1:15 this year, up from 1:8.7 last year and exceeding the target ratio of 1:10. The high level of interest is attributed to the strong track record of graduates, who enjoy high absorption rates in both the workforce and higher education. At the inauguration of the 58th cohort of graduates for the 2025/2026 academic year, all 216 students were declared competent after completing competency tests organised by the National Professional Certification Agency (BNSP). A school survey conducted up to the inauguration day indicated that 68.74 percent of graduates had already secured career or further education pathways, with 40.74 percent having entered employment and 27.78 percent continuing to higher education, while the remaining graduates were still undergoing recruitment processes monitored by the school. Head of SMK SMTI Padang, Sylvi, stated that the increase in applicants is a result of the school’s efforts to provide vocational education aligned with industry needs. The school implements a Dual System Curriculum under the policy of the Ministry of Industry through the Industrial Human Resources Development Agency (BPSDMI), designed to equip students not only with technical competencies but also with industrial character and work culture. Synergy with the business and industrial world is strengthened through practice-based learning programmes, including industrial work placements (PKL), BNSP competency certification, international Health, Safety, Environment and Quality (HSEQ) certification from Vapro, and English language proficiency enhancement through the TOEIC programme. The combination of an industry-based curriculum, competency certification, and partnerships with the business sector is seen as the key factor driving increased public trust in SMK SMTI Padang, as demonstrated by the record number of applicants and the increasingly competitive selection process for the 2026/2027 academic year.
