Industrial Product Expo to be in August
JAKARTA (JP): The government has appointed PT Napindo
Mediapratama, a company owned by tycoon Sudwikatmono, to
coordinate the Indonesian Product Exhibition 1995, to be held on
a 24,000-hectare plot at the Jakarta Fairground from Aug. 12
until Aug. 27.
Minister of Industry Tunky Ariwibowo told a press conference
yesterday that the appointment of Napindo was based on the fact
that this year's production exhibition would, for the first time,
not rely on government funding.
The government has thus far conducted two similar exhibitions
-- in 1985 and 1990 -- both with its own funds.
"The private sector will contribute the larger part of the
budget for this year's exhibition," Tunky said.
Sudwikatmono, who was also present at the press conference,
predicted that the exhibition would cost Rp 15 billion (US$6.8
million).
"The consequence of being chosen to be the coordinator of the
exhibition is that we have to raise funds ... And our main
targets are conglomerate owners," Sudwikatmono said.
He noted that although a few of conglomerate owners are
cynical about the exhibition, others have expressed support.
"If we cannot collect Rp 15 billion, we'll adjust our programs
in accordance with the funds available," Sudwikatmono said.
In addition to the exhibition, the committee will conduct a
number of supporting activities, such as seminars, social
gatherings and cultural shows. (rid)
