Industrial output up in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysia's industrial production index rose by 14.6 percent from a year earlier to 204.3 points in the six months to June, the Department of Statistics said yesterday.

The mining index rose by 12 percent to 141.2, manufacturing by 14.9 percent to 235.3 and electricity increased by 18.5 percent to 235.9.

In the manufacturing division, 16 of 19 manufacturing divisions reported index increases, including fabricated metal products, plastic products and electrical machinery.

The three sectors recording declines were glassware, chemical products and clothes, the department said.
