Indri defends title at Junior World C'ship

JAKARTA (JP): Indonesian junior weightlifter Sri Indriyani defended her title at the Junior Weightlifting World Championships in Capetown on Thursday by romping home with three gold medals.

Indriyani, nicknamed Indri, became the first female lifter to break a world record for the fourth time.

The Indonesian Weightlifting, Powerlifting and Bodybuilding Association said yesterday that Indri, who competed in the 46 kilogram division, lifted 75.5 kilograms in the snatch, 0.5 kilograms better than her previous personal best of 75 kilograms.

In the clean and jerk, Indri hoisted 97.5 kilograms after three attempts. She lifted her personal best 95 kilograms with her first lift and bettered it with 95.5 kilograms with her second lift.

Indri improved her overall record from 170 kilograms to 172.5 kilograms, which she produced at the Asian championship in South Korea.

The National Sports Council chairman Wismoyo Arismunandar said he was very satisfied with Indri's achievement.

"It's proof that weightlifting has a good chance to join badminton as a medal prospect sport for Indonesia at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. I'm very proud of her records," he said.

He was not sure if Indri would get a bonus.

"Indri is still a high school student. I'll talk to the minister of education and culture and see if Indri can have a better facilities as reward for her success."

Coach Imron Rosadi said Indri could lift 82.5 kilograms in the snatch and 102.5 kilograms in the clean and jerk but being three kilograms overweight before leaving for South Africa prevented her from doing so.

Indri and Imron are expected home tomorrow.

Another junior lifter Joko Hanggono, who is accompanied by coach Harry Wibowo, will compete on June 4 in the 108 kilogram- plus event. (yan)
