Indramayu Police have permanently closed illegal vehicle turnarounds, or U-turns, along the Pantura route in Indramayu. The public is expected to understand and appreciate the traffic safety rationale behind the closure of these illegal U-turns. “We are closing U-turns starting from the border with Subang Regency,” said Indramayu Police Chief AKBP Mochamad Fajar Gemilang on Friday (17/7). The Pantura road in Indramayu stretches approximately 68 kilometres. For the closure of illegal U-turns, Indramayu Police collaborated with the Ministry of Public Works, the Ministry of Transportation, and the Indramayu Regency Government. Fajar explained that along the Indramayu Pantura route there are 220 U-turns. However, of that number, only 79 are legal U-turns, while the number of illegal U-turns is higher, spread across 141 points. “We are permanently closing these 141 illegal U-turns,” Fajar stated. The U-turn closures will be socialised to the public. Residents are also urged to maintain the closures and not dismantle the U-turns or road medians that have been sealed. “We hope the public can understand and appreciate the traffic safety considerations behind the closure of these illegal U-turns. We are taking this step to prevent accidents. If any vandalism occurs, we will impose criminal charges,” Fajar stressed. One of the U-turn closures was carried out at a point in Kiajaran Kulon Village, Lohbener District. This location was the scene of a fatal accident that killed 12 people on Sunday (12/7). The U-turn closures are made permanent using concrete and cement. Workers carrying out the closures were guarded by police officers who managed vehicle traffic to prevent congestion.
