Indramayu Forest Unit Tightens Security to Prevent Forest Fires During Dry Season

The Indramayu Forest Management Unit (KPH) of Perum Perhutani is tightening security in forest areas to prevent forest and land fires (karhutla) during the dry season. Security has been increased in the Cikawung forest area, Terisi District, Indramayu Regency, through joint patrols involving the Cikawung Forest Management Section (BKPH), Forest Management Resorts (RPH), Territorial Police Officers, the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), and the Hutan Makmur Forest Village Community Institution (LMDH).

Head of BKPH Cikawung, Teten Sutendi, stated that the patrols are being conducted to anticipate the threat of forest and land fires during the current dry season. "Officers are sweeping several fire-prone points and installing warning boards prohibiting burning in the Cikawung forest area," he said. He added that patrol intensity has been increased to mitigate the risk of ecosystem damage from forest fires, with officers also thoroughly checking the readiness of fire control facilities and infrastructure.

Teten further noted that officers are educating communities living on the forest fringe about potential disasters that can occur during the dry season. The involvement of the LMDH Hutan Makmur is intended to ensure community participation in forest security. "The involvement of community elements in preserving the forest is believed to have a positive impact on grassroots vigilance in preventing security disturbances, including forest fires," he stressed.

The increased patrols and regular education represent Perhutani KPH Indramayu’s commitment to realising safe, sustainable, and continuous forest governance in the Indramayu region. Through this synergy, Teten hopes the forest areas under BKPH Cikawung’s jurisdiction will remain safe, sustainable, and protected from various threats, particularly forest fires.

Meanwhile, LMDH Hutan Makmur member Karli confirmed the readiness of communities around the Cikawung forest to act as the "eyes and ears" in reporting any potential security disturbances or forest fires. He noted that the educational efforts by BKPH Cikawung have also increased public understanding of the importance of preventing forest fires and anticipating security threats. "We are ready to support all of Perhutani’s efforts to preserve the forest, because the forest is a source of life that must be protected together," he asserted.
