Indramayu Family Murderer Sentenced to Death with 10-Year Probation
The Indramayu District Court in West Java has sentenced Ririn Rifanto to death with a 10-year probation period. The defendant was found legally and convincingly guilty of the premeditated murder of five members of a single family in Paoman Village, Indramayu Regency.
Presiding Judge Wimmy D. Simarmata stated that the defendant’s actions constituted an extraordinary crime because they involved violence against children resulting in death. The verdict was read out during a hearing at the Indramayu District Court on Wednesday (8/7).
“Sentencing the defendant therefore to death with a 10-year probation period,” Judge Wimmy said while reading the ruling. He added that the death penalty could be commuted to life imprisonment by Presidential Decree, with consideration from the Supreme Court, if the defendant demonstrates commendable behaviour during the probation period.
In its considerations, the panel of judges emphasised that premeditated murder is qualified as graviora delicta and super mala in se. Firm law enforcement is necessary as a form of general prevention and special prevention to protect society.
The judge also stressed that the verdict was based on trial facts and valid evidence. “The law does not judge a person based on the most touching story, but on convincing facts,” he asserted.
Aggravating factors included the deeply disturbing nature of the crime, the profound grief caused to the victims’ families, the absence of reconciliation, and the defendant’s dishonest and unremorseful attitude. The judge stated there were no mitigating circumstances.
Ririn Rifanto was found to have violated Article 459 of Law Number 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code in conjunction with Article 20 letter c of the Criminal Code, as well as Article 80 paragraph (3) of Law Number 35 of 2014 concerning Child Protection. The verdict aligns with the demand of the Indramayu District Prosecutor’s Office, which had also sought the death penalty.
The tragic case occurred in August 2025, claiming the lives of five family members: Sahroni (75), Budi (45), Euis (40), RK (7), and an eight-month-old baby. The panel’s decision brought the trial to a swift conclusion, and the defendant was immediately escorted out of the courtroom by officers.
