Jakarta (ANTARA) - The IndoTelko Forum 2026, a discussion event bringing together the government and technology industry players, has championed the role of 5G to serve as the backbone digital infrastructure for nurturing artificial intelligence (AI) innovation in Indonesia.

As a connectivity technology, 5G is known for providing ultra-fast connectivity, low latency, and high capacity. These features align well with the needs of AI innovation development, which requires large volumes of data and fast uplink speeds.

“We are opening a multistakeholder dialogue to unify efforts in addressing challenges and maximising 5G opportunities, so that Indonesia can reap optimal benefits and accelerate the realisation of the Golden Indonesia 2045 vision,” said co-founder of Indotelko Group, Setia Gunawan, regarding this discussion forum in Jakarta on Wednesday.

An Ericsson ConsumerLab survey indicates that the rising adoption of AI is also driving the need for reliable and consistent networks.

This positions 5G in two strategic roles: first, to accommodate surges in data volume and uplink needs; and second, as critical national infrastructure.

When integrated, 5G and AI open up innovation opportunities in various sectors such as industry, healthcare, education, and public services.

In response, government representative Wayan Toni Supriyanto, Director General of Digital Infrastructure at the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kemkomdigi), stated that digital transformation requires an adaptive policy and regulatory framework to benefit the people.

This also applies to supporting 5G expansion to accommodate the growth of AI innovation in Indonesia. Therefore, the government is striving to ensure that 5G and AI digital infrastructure is not built haphazardly, but also that its utilisation is given due attention.

He also emphasised that collaboration among stakeholders is key to the successful implementation of technology in driving digital transformation to realise the Golden Indonesia 2045 vision.

“We want to ensure that the existing regulations will become enablers, not obstacles, in driving the growth of the national digital ecosystem. We also realise that digital transformation cannot be done alone. Collaboration remains the main key,” said Wayan.

As an industry representative, President Director of Ericsson Indonesia, Nora Wahby, supports Indonesia in promptly expanding the coverage of this connectivity technology so as not to miss opportunities to grow the digital economy.

“5G will be a crucial digital foundation for realising the Golden Indonesia 2045 vision, as well as strategic infrastructure that enables AI technology to develop on a large scale,” said Nora.

One thing that Nora considers important for the equitable distribution of 5G in Indonesia is accelerating the deployment of standalone 5G (SA) networks, so as to accommodate the surge in mobile data usage for running AI that continues to grow in various industrial sectors.
