Indonet Strengthens National Connectivity with Third Underground Fibre Optic Route to Bekasi and Karawang
Indonet is strengthening the foundation of national connectivity through the development of its East Route, an underground fibre optic corridor linking Central Jakarta with industrial estates and data centres in Bekasi and Karawang. The East Route is part of Indonet’s eastern corridor development, which comprises three routes. Following the operation of the first two routes in 2025, the third route has now officially commenced service, spanning more than 80 kilometres with a capacity of 2 × 576 fibre cores. With the activation of this route, Indonet’s total fibre optic network now reaches approximately 850 kilometres, representing a 141 per cent increase compared to the period before 2024. This provides greater capacity for service expansion while strengthening data centre interconnectivity for customers requiring high availability and business continuity. Indonet is also one of the first digital infrastructure providers in Indonesia to construct an entirely underground fibre optic corridor connecting Central Jakarta with industrial and data centre zones in the Bekasi and Karawang industrial areas. Concurrently, Indonet has upgraded its backbone network capacity to 100 Gbps to meet the connectivity demands of industrial zones. This infrastructure reinforcement aligns with the company’s network expansion into key industrial growth centres, including the Mitra Karawang Industrial Estate (KIM). As Indonesia’s data centre ecosystem evolves, the need for reliable digital connectivity with high bandwidth, low latency, and high availability continues to grow. In this context, data centre interconnection infrastructure becomes a critical foundation to ensure fast and secure data exchange between facilities, supporting business operational continuity. Investment in data centres, cloud, and AI will continue to increase, but the value of these investments can only be realised if supported by equally robust connectivity. He stated that the company continues to invest in building underground fibre optic networks and reliable data centre interconnection infrastructure so that customers can grow with certainty, unconstrained by infrastructure limitations. Beyond enhancing connectivity reliability, investment in underground fibre optic networks strengthens infrastructure resilience. Compared to aerial fibre networks, underground fibre optics offer better protection against various operational risks, enabling more stable services for mission-critical business needs such as disaster recovery and AI workloads that require consistent network performance. Agus Ariyanto, Operational Director of Indonet, explained that the operation of the underground fibre optic route is part of the company’s long-term strategy to build more resilient and sustainable digital infrastructure. He noted that the company chose to continue developing underground fibre optic networks because this infrastructure offers a higher level of reliability compared to aerial fibre networks. The entire network is built underground at a depth of approximately 1.5 to 2 metres, providing better protection against external risks such as extreme weather and construction activities. This allows Indonet to deliver more stable connectivity, strengthen network redundancy, and ensure services remain reliable to support mission-critical connectivity needs. As investment from hyperscalers, cloud providers, and enterprises increases, the value of Indonesia’s data centre market is projected to grow from approximately USD 1.83 billion in 2026 to USD 3.48 billion by 2031, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.71 per cent. This growth is driving increased demand for connectivity infrastructure capable of linking various data centre facilities quickly, securely, and reliably.
