Every time we throw a bag of rubbish into the bin, we rarely question where it will ultimately end up. Many people assume the matter is settled once waste collectors have emptied the bins outside their homes. Yet the journey of that rubbish has only just begun. Thousands of tonnes of waste from households, offices, markets, and industry head to final disposal sites (TPA), where our version of ‘finished’ collides with a reality that is far from over.

The Bantargebang Integrated Waste Treatment Plant (TPST) in Bekasi is a stark example of the severity of Indonesia’s waste problem. For years, this area has been the final destination for waste from Jakarta, and its volume has grown relentlessly. Towering mountains of rubbish are a sign that the land cannot be expanded indefinitely, whilst the flow of waste never ceases. Other cities face similar conditions. In Surabaya, the Benowo landfill, which has taken a step forward by processing waste into electricity, is still struggling. Every day, incoming waste continues to strain existing capacity. This proves that no matter how advanced the technology, it will not suffice if our waste-generating habits do not change.

The annual increase in waste is inseparable from evolving public lifestyles. A growing population, urbanisation, a booming trade sector, and the habit of consuming ready-to-eat food and disposable goods all contribute to swelling waste volumes. Unfortunately, this surge has not been matched by an adequate waste management system. As a result, most waste simply ends up in the same place: the final disposal site.

The situation is exacerbated because many regions still rely entirely on old methods. Waste is collected door-to-door, transported by workers, and then directly dumped in landfills without any prior sorting. Yet, among those piles, there are many materials that could actually be recycled or reused. As long as this pattern remains unchanged, landfills will continue to run out of space, regardless of how much new land the government prepares. The problem is not just about space, but about a system that has not evolved.

The waste issue is not simply a matter of insufficient landfill space. The root of the problem lies in the public’s perception of waste itself. Rubbish that has left the house is considered no longer anyone’s concern, as if ‘thrown away means finished’, requiring no further thought. This assumption is far from reality. Much of the waste we discard daily still holds value. Plastic bottles, used paper, food scraps—all of these can be reprocessed if sorted at home before they become mixed and lose their potential.

On the other hand, a highly convenient lifestyle worsens the situation. Single-use products have become an inseparable part of daily life. Plastic packaging, food containers, shopping bags, and various other synthetic material-based products are consumed in vast quantities every day. The problem is that the waste generated from these habits does not decompose easily and continues to pile up endlessly in landfills. This issue does not stand alone. Low public awareness of waste sorting, limited available recycling facilities, and a lack of serious effort by producers to reduce packaging waste are all interconnected, making the problem increasingly difficult to unravel.

If this condition is allowed to continue, the impact will not stop at the issue of limited landfill space. The ever-growing mounds of waste have the potential to produce large amounts of methane gas. This gas is not only highly flammable but also contributes to increased greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, leachate can seep into the ground and contaminate water sources around landfill areas.

The effects are felt directly by the community. Pungent odours, increased populations of flies and rats, and the threat of disease outbreaks are realities faced by residents living near disposal sites. From a budgetary perspective, the government must bear the ever-increasing costs of waste management, whilst the need for new land never diminishes. As long as the management pattern remains unchanged, building new landfills will never be the real answer; it merely postpones the same problem, allowing it to resurface in a different location.

Solving the waste problem cannot be achieved simply by expanding landfill capacity or building new facilities. A more crucial step is to reduce the amount of waste from its source, namely households. Simple habits such as separating organic and inorganic waste before disposal will greatly assist the processing stage. Organic waste can be turned into compost or fertiliser, whilst inorganic waste that still has economic value can be channelled to waste banks or recycled, preventing it from all ending up in landfills.

These efforts must be supported by various parties. The government plays a vital role in providing adequate waste management facilities and infrastructure, expanding sorting services, and ensuring that waste reduction policies are implemented consistently. Meanwhile, businesses must also take part by designing more environmentally friendly products and packaging and reducing the use of single-use materials that are difficult to reprocess.

Ultimately, the success of waste management depends on the awareness and participation of all elements of society. Waste is not solely the responsibility of sanitation workers or the government, but the responsibility of every individual who produces it.
