Indonesia's Top 5 Economic Growth Leaders: None from Java
Indonesia’s economy grew 5.29% year-on-year (yoy) in the second quarter of 2026. Behind this national figure, the pace of growth between provinces still shows a wide gap. A number of regions managed to record growth far above the national average. However, the five provinces with the highest economic growth in the second quarter of 2026 are once again all located outside Java. Based on Gross Regional Domestic Product (PDRB) data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS), North Maluku became the province with the highest economic growth in the second quarter of 2026, reaching 15.35% (yoy). North Maluku is the only province able to achieve double-digit growth. North Maluku has also recorded double-digit growth for the last seven quarters. Below it is West Nusa Tenggara with growth of 7.41%, followed by Riau Islands at 6.99%, Gorontalo at 6.20%, and Southeast Sulawesi at 6.19%. These five provinces are the only regions that recorded growth above 6% in the second quarter of this year. All of them are also above the national economic growth rate of 5.29%. High economic growth has not occurred evenly across all of Indonesia. While five provinces managed to record growth above 6%, most other provinces are in the 4%-6% range. In fact, Central Papua experienced a contraction of 15.44%. In the lower group are Southwest Papua which grew 2.82%, East Kalimantan 3.35%, Highland Papua 3.30%, West Papua 3.41%, and Central Kalimantan 3.53%. This range shows that economic activity between regions is still moving at different speeds, even though the national economy as a whole continues to grow above 5%.
