Indonesia's Rice Stocks Super Secure Amid Geopolitical Tensions, Amran: Highest in History!
The Head of the National Food Agency (Bapanas) and Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman stated that the government’s rice reserve stocks (CBP) have surpassed 4.3 million tonnes. This amount ensures Indonesia’s food security amid global geopolitical dynamics.
“For the food sector, alhamdulillah, today it is the highest in history. Our stocks are 4.3 million tonnes. It has never happened before. Last year, the maximum was 4.2 million tonnes. Today, 4.3 million tonnes. Next month (it could reach) 5 million tonnes. The warehouse capacity is 3 million tonnes, we rent warehouses with 2 million tonnes capacity. Once this is done, food is sorted,” said Amran in Jakarta on Monday (30/3/2026).
Indonesia’s rice self-sufficiency achieved in 2025 is one of the strategies to face global geopolitical dynamics. He emphasised that Indonesia must be able to stand on its own feet as per President Prabowo Subianto’s vision, to become a sovereign and independent nation, including in the food sector.
“In the midst of heating geopolitical conditions, we need quick steps. The President is truly visionary. Upon his inauguration, he immediately said food must be resolved, we must be food independent and energy independent,” he said.
According to Amran, the government rice reserve stocks managed by Perum Bulog in March this year have again set the highest record in history, reaching 4.3 million tonnes. He assured that the CBP quantity will thicken further in the following months because the absorption equivalent to rice from domestic production continues.
Bapanas recorded the CBP acquisition at the end of March 2026 reaching 4.3 million tonnes, increasing rapidly by 274.9 percent compared to CBP in March 2024. At that time, CBP in March 2024 was still at 1.1 million tonnes with domestic rice procurement realisation around 24.6 thousand tonnes.
Meanwhile, compared to CBP in March 2025, it also increased by 87.3 percent. This is because CBP in March 2025 according to Bapanas records was around 2.3 million tonnes with domestic production rice procurement realisation around 610.2 thousand tonnes.
As a strong implication of the solid CBP stocks prioritising the absorption of domestic rice production, it also affects the stability of rice inflation.
“So alhamdulillah, during the holy month of Ramadan, rice prices did not contribute to inflation. And in the last 10 to 20 years, rice was usually the number one contributor to inflation,” explained Amran.
