Greece will introduce regulations restricting social media use for children, similar to those implemented in Indonesia through PP Tunas. The rules will prohibit access to platforms for children under 15 years old starting 1 January 2027.

“Greece will be one of the first countries to take such an initiative,” said Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, quoted from Reuters, on Thursday (9/4/2026).

From early next year in Greece, platforms must restrict their users. Failure to comply will result in fines stipulated under the European Union’s Digital Services Act, up to 6% of global turnover.

Greece has not yet mandated platforms to conduct age verification, as applied in other countries. However, it recommends implementing mechanisms similar to those in the European Union.

The government also emphasised that parents can assist in these social media access restriction efforts.

He said he had spoken with several parents before making the decision. This policy is expected to be applied across the European Union as well.

“Our goal is to push the European Union in this direction too,” he added.

Mitsotakis has written to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to request coordinated action across the region. Because unilateral efforts at a national level will not be sufficient.

The letter also contains a request to set the digital adulthood age across Europe at 15 years. This age requires age verification and repetition for all platforms.

The European Union is also urged to establish a harmonised enforcement and sanctions framework. Including the implementation of an integrated system by the end of this year.

Australia became the first country in the world to impose restrictions on access for those under 16 years old starting last December. Indonesia implemented a similar measure on 28 March 2026.

In Indonesia, the Ministry of Communication and Digital has stated that X and BigoLive have fulfilled their obligations under the PP Tunas regulation. Meanwhile, Meta, which oversees Instagram, Facebook, and Threads, as well as Google, owner of YouTube, have not yet complied with the rules.
