JAKARTA, KOMPAS.COM - Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan, also known as Zulhas, said the government is preparing a number of measures to enable Indonesia to reach the national protein self-sufficiency target for 2026.

This was disclosed at an iftar gathering at the Central Leadership Council Building (DPP) in South Jakarta on Friday evening, 6 March 2026.

The government will boost fishermen’s welfare using the Nilai Tukar Nelayan (NTN) indicator. NTN measures the ratio between the prices received (income) and the prices paid (production/consumption costs).

“Until now, the NTN has remained lower than that of farmers,” Zulhas said. Therefore, the government aims to raise NTN to at least be on a par with rice farmers.

“When prices do not align, village cooperatives will purchase the catches,” he said.

The government will also build six feed mills and facilities for breeding chickens or day-old chicks (DOC) so that the livestock sector is not controlled only by large corporations, but can also be accessed by the public.

Previously, Zulhas explained that the protein self-sufficiency target, including fish, chicken, eggs, and other protein sources, was slated to be achieved this year.

Looking back to last year, Indonesia was deemed to have achieved self-sufficiency in rice and maize. Given this, Zulhas is optimistic that protein self-sufficiency will succeed with infrastructure development.

“The government will also build 1,000 fishing villages equipped with facilities such as ice plants and cold storage,” he said.

It is hoped that these facilities will raise the welfare of communities.

“Fishermen will be able to store fish for up to six months, giving them greater bargaining power,” he added.
