Indonesia's Poverty Rate Falls to 8.07% in March 2026, BPS Reports

The number of people living in poverty in Indonesia fell by 430,000 to 22.93 million in March 2026, according to the national statistics agency BPS. The poverty rate declined to 8.07% from 8.25% in September 2025.

Deputy for Balance Sheet and Statistical Analysis at BPS, Edy Mahmud, stated that the trend of declining poverty numbers and rates has continued since March 2023. The national poverty line in March 2026 was recorded at Rp669,235 per capita per month, an increase from Rp641,443 in September 2025.

BPS cautioned that the poverty line must be viewed within the context of households, as expenditures are typically shared among family members. The average poor household in Indonesia comprised 4.62 members in March 2026, with the poverty line varying across provinces due to differences in price levels and consumption patterns.

Regionally, the rural poverty rate remained higher than the urban rate, at 10.67% compared to 6.34%. While both areas recorded a decline in poverty rates compared to September 2025, the Poverty Depth Index (P1) and Poverty Severity Index (P2) increased in rural areas, suggesting that the average spending of the rural poor has fallen further below the poverty line.
