Indonesia's Poor Population Continues to Decline, Hits Lowest Level in Nearly 30 Years

The number of poor people in Indonesia has fallen again, with the latest figure marking the lowest level in almost three decades.

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded 22.93 million people living in poverty as of March 2026. This represents a decrease of 430,000 people compared to September 2025, when the figure stood at 23.36 million.

The decline is also reflected in the poverty percentage, which dropped from 8.25% in September 2025 to 8.07% in March 2026, a reduction of 0.18 percentage points.

This achievement brings both the number and percentage of Indonesia’s poor population to their lowest positions since at least 1999, or nearly 27 years.

In this release, BPS also introduced a presentation of the national poverty line in the context of households, complementing the per capita measure that has been used so far. The national poverty line in March 2026 was recorded at Rp669,235 per capita per month. With the average poor household consisting of 4.62 members, this figure is equivalent to Rp3,091,866 per poor household per month.
