Indonesia's Part-Time Workers Reach 38.41 Million in May 2026

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded 38.41 million part-time workers in May 2026, an increase of 72,000. Meanwhile, full-time workers reached 98.98 million, rising by 391,000 during the same period. Part-time workers are defined as those working fewer than 35 hours per week, a category that includes underemployed and part-time workers. M. Edy Mahmud, Deputy for Balance Sheets and Statistical Analysis at BPS, stated that in May 2026, the majority of the working population were full-time employees, accounting for 66.80 per cent, while the remaining 33.20 per cent were part-time. Compared to February 2026, the percentage of full-time workers increased by 0.03 percentage points, while part-time workers decreased by the same margin. Based on employment status, BPS recorded 87.88 million people working in informal activities, or 59.30 per cent, while 60.31 million people, or 40.70 per cent, were engaged in formal activities. The percentage of people working in formal activities increased by 0.12 percentage points compared to February 2026. Formal employment includes those working with the assistance of permanent workers and paid employees, while informal activities cover self-employed individuals, those assisted by temporary or unpaid family workers, casual workers, and unpaid family workers.
