Indonesia’s natural wealth comprises a diverse array of fauna and flora spread across various regions. With this diverse natural wealth, Indonesia has the potential to introduce local natural raw materials through beauty products. The Indonesian Cosmetics Companies Association (Perkosmi) has made this one of their missions. Perkosmi General Chairman Sancoyo Antarikso stated that many Indonesian cosmetics companies still use imported raw materials rather than local ones. The fragrance industry is one sector that, in his view, still relies quite heavily on imported raw materials. However, Sancoyo said that not all imported perfumes are suitable for the skin conditions and climate of Indonesians. “Oh yes, perfume is one of the interesting aspects in my opinion. Because if we look at it, not all imported perfumes are suitable for Indonesian skin,” he said. Amid this situation, Perkosmi is trying to encourage the utilisation of local natural raw materials while reducing dependence on imports. According to Sancoyo, the challenges of using imported materials are not only about price but also related to supply and global geopolitical conditions. One of Perkosmi’s efforts is to collaborate with various universities to develop research on natural-based cosmetic raw materials. “This is one of the efforts we are making. We are collaborating with leading universities,” Sancoyo said. He explained that the research results from academics are then introduced to industry players, so that innovations in local raw materials can be more easily applied to cosmetic products. According to Sancoyo, the Innovation Zone serves as a collaborative space that brings together industry players, researchers, and raw material suppliers to explore new opportunities in the development of local cosmetics. CEO of Martha Tilaar Group, Kilala Tilaar, who also serves as Technical Director of the Innovation Zone Award for ICI 2026, stated that the event was created as a platform to appreciate innovations in cosmetic raw materials, both from global and local companies.
