Indonesia's Muslim-Friendly Tourism Facilities Deemed Superior
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana stated that Muslim-friendly tourism facilities in Indonesia are considered superior compared to those in other countries. “From the perspective of the Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) assessment framework, Indonesia excels in the services aspect,” she said in Jakarta on Thursday. “Especially in the availability of halal food, ease of access to worship facilities or mosques, as well as airport services and accommodation options that support the needs of Muslim travellers,” she explained.
In addition to having supporting facilities for Muslim-friendly tourism, she noted that Indonesia possesses destinations with natural beauty, culture, and the hospitality of its people that offer authentic travel experiences. Muslim travellers can enjoy a variety of experiences, including cultural, marine, culinary, and wellness services, without worrying about difficulties in performing worship and observing religious rules.
Fifteen provinces with the capacity to support Muslim-friendly tourism have been included in the Indonesia Muslim Travel Index (IMTI). Meanwhile, West Java Province was named the most promising region this year at the Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) Awards during the Halal In Travel Global Summit (HIT-GS) 2026 in Singapore.
The Tourism Minister conveyed that Indonesia ranked second in the GMTI 2026 with a score of 79, the highest score since the country’s participation in the GMTI. “This achievement reflects the growing maturity of Indonesia’s Muslim-friendly tourism ecosystem, while also serving as motivation to continue strengthening the aspects assessed in the ACES (Access, Communication, Environment, and Service) framework,” she said.
Widiyanti stated that the Ministry of Tourism is collaborating with relevant ministries, agencies, and stakeholders to develop and promote integrated Muslim-friendly travel packages. Development efforts include improving connectivity and accessibility, strengthening the halal ecosystem, and developing priority destinations. Furthermore, the government is working to enhance the quality of services at airports, hotels, restaurants, and tourist destinations; increase the capacity of tourism human resources; and intensify the promotion of Muslim-friendly tourism. The Ministry of Tourism is also strengthening collaboration with local governments and businesses to deliver integrated and high-quality Muslim-friendly travel experiences.
