The Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) has reaffirmed that Indonesia’s status in the MSCI index remains within the emerging market category. This clarification was issued to address circulating market rumours regarding a suspected downgrade of Indonesia’s status to a frontier market by MSCI.

Acting President Director of the IDX, Jeffrey Hendrik, urged investors to always base their investment decisions on accurate information. He stated that the rumours circulating in the market regarding Indonesia’s MSCI status are incorrect.

“Yesterday, we observed inaccurate information circulating in the market via screenshots, which falsely suggested an announcement from MSCI placing Indonesia in the frontier market. This information is false,” Jeffrey told reporters at the IDX building in Jakarta on Thursday.

Jeffrey advised investors to cross-check market information before making decisions. Furthermore, he expressed optimism that MSCI will not downgrade Indonesia’s index, noting that significant efforts have been made to facilitate the market transparency required by global index providers.

“I repeat, based on the concrete steps we have taken, we have very high expectations that Indonesia will remain in the emerging market category,” he said.

In the most recent announcement on Tuesday (12/5/2026) US time, Indonesia was maintained in the emerging markets list alongside countries such as China, India, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Thailand.

However, while the market status remains unchanged, the MSCI May 2026 Global Index Review did show a significant impact on specific domestic equities, as six Indonesian stocks were removed from the MSCI Global Standard Index with no new additions to the index.
