Indonesia's mining revenue jumps as commodity prices rise

The increase was partly driven by higher prices for several mineral and coal commodities, Tri Winarno, the ministry’s Director General for Minerals and Coal, said at a mining conference in Jakarta on Thursday.

Coal-related non-tax revenue reached 66 trillion rupiah (US$3.76 billion) through August 31, up from 59 trillion rupiah in the same period last year.

The increase came despite lower coal production, Tri said.

Coal output totaled 817.48 million metric tons in 2025, while production through July 2026 reached 423.71 million tons, averaging about 60.5 million tons per month.

The monthly average was below 2025’s average production of about 68.1 million tons, according to ministry data.

The figures show mining output does not simply need to be maximized, but should be aligned with market demand and optimized to benefit the state, Tri said.

“Our approach is optimum production, balancing output with market demand, domestic market obligations, prices, logistics and reserve sustainability,” he said.

Nickel-related non-tax revenue reached 21 trillion rupiah (US$1.20 billion) through August 31, more than double the 10 trillion rupiah recorded in the same period last year.

As of September 1, 2026, nickel ore production totaled 173.79 million tons, while bauxite reached 17.76 million tons, tin 40,650 tons and copper 100.12 million tons, ministry data showed.

Tri said future mineral and coal management would focus not only on increasing production but also on creating greater value through downstream processing.

“The focus is not only on how much we produce, but on how much value we gain or create from the mining industry,” he said.
