Indonesia's MICE Industry Strategy and ICE BSD's Sustainability Commitment for GSDC 2026
The Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions (MICE) industry continues to strengthen its role as a strategic pillar of Indonesia’s economic growth and tourism. As of September 2025, Indonesia has successfully hosted 134 national events, attracting 10.8 million visitors. This achievement places Indonesia 37th globally and 4th in the ASEAN region, reinforcing its competitiveness as an international conference destination. The government is now targeting an increase in the MICE sector’s foreign exchange contribution from 10% to 15% by 2029. This strategy will focus on developing the national event ecosystem, enhancing destination competitiveness, and creating an inclusive and sustainable economic impact. This growth momentum paves the way for Indonesia to host large-scale global forums. A significant achievement is the appointment of the Indonesia Convention Exhibition (ICE) BSD as the host of the Global Sustainable Development Congress (GSDC) 2026. The forum will bring together over 5,000 participants, 500 speakers, and delegates from 100 countries to discuss accelerating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Siti Karmila, General Manager of ICE BSD, stated that this appointment is a recognition of ICE BSD’s operational standards. ‘We are committed not only to providing the best facilities but also to becoming a global collaboration hub to drive innovation for sustainable development,’ she said. For the GSDC 2026 event, ICE BSD is collaborating with Rekosistem to implement an integrated waste management system. This initiative includes the use of Reverse Vending Machines (RVM) and on-site waste sorting education. As a result, 1.62 tonnes of waste were managed with a recovery rate of 41%. This effort led to a tangible reduction of 667.9 kg of CO2 emissions. In addition to its green commitment, ICE BSD was chosen for its superior connectivity. Located in the heart of BSD City, the venue is only 35 minutes from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. Public transport access is also well-supported through the integration of the KAI Railink Airport Train and the Commuter Line to Cisauk Station. With a total area of 85,000 square metres, ICE BSD continues to strengthen its position as Indonesia’s largest MICE destination, capable of integrating modern operations with sustainable environmental responsibility.
