The Special Task Force for Upstream Oil and Gas Business Activities (SKK Migas) has announced that the drilling of the directional J-type infill well Menggala South-21, operated by PT Pertamina Hulu Rokan (PHR), has successfully recorded an initial production of 2,035 barrels of oil per day (bpd) with zero water cut. Head of SKK Migas Djoko Siswanto stated that drilling commenced in June 2026 and was completed on 19 July 2026. Initial test results showed production reaching 2,035 BOPD. “Alhamdulillah, the drilling of the J-type directional infill well, Menggala South #21 at PHR, which began in June 2026 and was completed on 19 July, yielded a production result of 2,035 BOPD with zero water cut,” Djoko said in a written statement on Thursday (23/7/2026). The drilling was carried out using the GW-337 rig with a 550 HP capacity (Electric Rig) and was completed without any workplace accidents. The Menggala South-21 well targeted the Menggala Formation layer at a depth of 4,146 feet, or approximately 1,236 metres. During execution, the drilling faced several technical challenges, including a long open hole section, risk of sloughing shale, loss circulation, crossing fault, and differential sticking in the production section. Despite these challenges, the drilling was successfully completed by applying a defensive drilling approach. This strategy resulted in the well being completed 9 per cent faster and reduced costs by up to 44 per cent below the initial target. “The well was completed using a defensive drilling approach, resulting in a 9 per cent faster completion and 44 per cent lower cost than planned. Please pray that, God willing, it can be brought into production soon,” Djoko said.
