The Indonesian government has renewed calls for all parties to exercise restraint following combined attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran, which prompted retaliatory strikes from Tehran, causing persistent tensions in the Gulf region.

According to Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu), following reports from various Indonesian representatives in the Middle East, Indonesia has conveyed renewed deep concern over the escalating tensions and their impact on the region.

“The Indonesian government calls upon the United States and Israel to halt attacks against Iran,” according to a written statement from Kemlu RI released on the social media platform X, monitored in Jakarta on Monday.

The statement continued with a call “to Iran to cease attacks targeting neighbouring countries in the region, including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Jordan”.

Indonesia has reaffirmed the obligation of all parties to uphold the principles of international law, particularly regarding the prohibition on the use of force against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of any nation.

Beyond urging restraint, Indonesia has also pressed for the tensions to be defused and for negotiations through dialogue and diplomacy to resume.

Additionally, the Indonesian government has intensified monitoring of Indonesian citizens residing in Gulf region countries and continues to implement contingency and evacuation measures as required.

“The Indonesian government continues to closely monitor the impact of the conflict on Indonesian nationals in the region and has prepared contingency measures should conditions necessitate repatriation from various countries,” Kemlu RI stated.

Previously, on 28 February, the United States and Israel launched a series of attacks against numerous targets in Iran, including Tehran, resulting in reports of casualties and damage, including involving Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Iran subsequently launched retaliatory strikes against Israeli territory and United States military facilities in several Gulf countries.

In response to the escalating Middle East conflict, Indonesia also stated on 28 February its readiness to facilitate negotiations between the conflicting parties to restore conducive security conditions in the region.

Meanwhile, Kemlu RI confirmed that the first phase of evacuation of 32 Indonesian citizens from Iran commenced on Friday (6 March) via Azerbaijan, with arrival expected this week.
