Indonesia's Initiative to Act as Mediator Described as Concrete Diplomacy

A researcher from Indikator Politik, Bawono Kumoro, has assessed that President Prabowo Subianto’s initiative to offer mediation of tensions between the United States and Iran represents concrete diplomacy. President Prabowo’s step in offering such mediation should be appreciated.

“This is because Indonesia has a tradition of peaceful diplomacy and a position relatively accepted by various parties,” said Bawono on Monday (2 March 2026).

The escalation of tensions currently occurring in the Middle East region, according to Bawono, can threaten global stability. Therefore, the role of nations practising an independent and active foreign policy such as Indonesia is needed to dampen tensions so they do not develop into wider conflict.

According to Bawono, Indonesia possesses strong diplomatic capital to encourage dialogue. This ranges from governmental channels to diplomacy through parliament. Indonesia should play a role as a communication bridge to promote the creation of peace.
