Indonesia's Inflation Hits 0.13% in April, Plane Tickets Blamed!
High price pressures in the transportation sector, as well as food and beverage providers or restaurants, triggered inflation in April 2026.
According to records from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), inflation in April 2026 stood at 0.13% month-on-month, with year-to-date inflation at 1.06%.
Inflationary pressures were propelled by the transportation sector, which saw 0.99% inflation with a contribution of 0.12%, and food and beverage provision or restaurants at 0.69% with a contribution of 0.07%.
The high inflation in the transportation sector was inseparable from the soaring airfare tariffs and the increase in non-subsidised fuel prices that occurred that month, a consequence of the continuously rising global crude oil prices due to the war in the Middle East.
“The dominant commodities driving this inflation are air transport tariffs with a contribution of 0.11%, and petrol with an inflation contribution of 0.02%,” said Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics at BPS, Ateng Hartono, during a press conference in Jakarta on Monday (4/5/2026).
In addition to airfare tariffs and petrol, inflation in April 2026 was also driven by cooking oil price inflation with a contribution of 0.05%, tomatoes at 0.03%, and rice at 0.02%.
Meanwhile, commodities contributing to deflation or downward price pressure in April 2026 came from food, beverages, and tobacco, with deflation of 0.2% and a contribution of 0.06%.
“There are commodities contributing to deflation in April 2026, namely broiler chicken meat with a contribution of 0.11%. Then, jewellery gold with a deflation contribution of 0.09%, cayenne pepper and broiler eggs with deflation contributions of 0.06% and 0.04%,” said Ateng.
