PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk (PGE) has stated that Indonesia’s geothermal resources possess a distinct advantage over those in several other countries, as they can generate energy consistently without being affected by weather or seasonal changes. PGE Director of Exploration and Development Edwil Suzandi said this consistency is a key reason why geothermal energy deserves to be a backbone of the national electricity supply. He noted that Indonesia’s geothermal energy can supply power stably at all times, both day and night, and is unaffected by rain or dry seasons. “Geothermal energy in Indonesia is no joke. It can truly supply energy in Indonesia without being distracted by any situation. Day, night, rain, no rain, heat, it consistently supplies geothermal energy,” Edwil said during CNBC Indonesia’s Energy Corner programme, quoted on Monday (27/7/2026). He explained that several countries with geothermal potential, such as Iceland and Turkey, still experience changes in the quality of their geothermal resources due to seasonal and temperature differences. In contrast, Indonesia’s geothermal characteristics are considered more stable, producing steam of relatively consistent quality. “This is not the case in European countries like Iceland. They also have geothermal energy. But the quality of their geothermal energy will differ between hot and cold situations. The same goes for Turkey,” he said. He added that one proof of Indonesia’s geothermal reliability is the first geothermal well in Kamojang, Garut, which was discovered around 100 years ago and continues to produce steam of maintained quality to this day.
