Indonesia's Gas Production Could Soar 150% in Five Years, Says Minister
Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia has projected that Indonesia’s gas production could surge by up to 150% within the next five years. This significant increase is expected to be driven by the commencement of operations at several giant gas fields across the country.
Bahlil highlighted major projects, including a large discovery in East Kalimantan managed by Italian energy firm ENI in cooperation with Malaysian oil and gas company Petronas, which is targeted to begin production in 2029. He also pointed to the progress of the Masela Block project, which recently held a groundbreaking ceremony.
“In the next five years, our gas production will increase by 150% from our current lifting. Currently, our gas production is approximately almost 1 million [barrels of oil equivalent per day],” he stated at the Global Hydrogen Ecosystem Summit and Exhibition (GHES) 2026 in Jakarta.
Bahlil emphasised that optimising the abundant gas potential is key to strengthening national energy security and supporting the transition to clean energy. “The state’s alignment will be determined by, first, our continued use of clean energy; second, energy efficiency; and third, energy that can be produced within the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia,” he concluded.
